Nuclear power industry in Korea has successfully developed during last decades. Demand on nuclear safety-related structures and other nuclear facilities have increased domestically and internationally. This is a great opportunity for building engineers to expand their work area. In addition, technology and expertise of building engineers will contribute to enhance the safety of nuclear structures.
Most nuclear structures are a wall-slab system and designed in accordance with ACI 349, which is based on the ACI 318 building code. Therefore, these nuclear structures can be considered as building structures rather than civil structures. Recently many building researchers are also involved in nuclear structure projects.
This article provides a review of the US nuclear power industry to help establishing a strategic road map of Korean building institute and industry on nuclear power plants.
The United States is the world’s largest producer of nuclear electricity, accounting for more than 30% of worldwide nuclear-generated electricity. In 2013 US nuclear power plants produced 789 billion kWh, which was 19% of total electricity generation. Therefore, understanding the US nuclear power industry is a crucial part of understanding the world nuclear power industry and its future.
