This study examined how deviance, a criterion of news value, influences audience’s selection of news articles in relation to negativity and normativity. The deviance has been used to evaluate the values of news events and found to be related with news coverage by journalism studies. However, no attempt has been made to investigate the deviance with other factors influencing news selection. In this sense, this study conducted an experiment with 4(degree of deviance; none, low, medium, high) × 3(types of deviance: positively statistical deviance, negatively statistical deviance, normative deviance) between-subject design. the dependent variable was the extent to which a given stimulus news story is selected fast. Experiment participants browsed a news site that displayed 10 stories including one stimulus story for longer than five minutes. The order by which stories are selected was recorded. A total of 480 participants(40 for each of 12 conditions) finished this experiments. The results showed that the degree of deviance influenced the story selection by a linear trend and normativity, not negativity, made a significant difference in the story selection. In addition, a significant interaction effect between the degree of deviance and normativity was found. This study will contribute to expanding the boundary of news value studies by covering new concepts such as negativity and normativity.
