The Postman to Neruda(Ardiente Paciencia;El Cartero De Neruda by Antonio Skarmeta) and the movie The Postman to Neruda(Il Postino directed by Michael Radford )that dramatized the work show the process that Mario became a poet, and through the process they interestingly demonstrate the fact that the figure can become the mechanism which enable to be bond between human.
In this works the figure becomes the cognition power which enable to critically cognize the social system making the desire not known to self. The reason that the metaphor enable us to cognize the desire and the truth of society owes to the principle of abstraction enabling to grasp the core of matter and to perform the function which can analogize the unknown from the known, the centrifugal force of which Mario internalizes with poetry of Neruda.
I tried to solve the power of figure as a resistance to the deceitfulness and regulation nature of langage with "reaction formation" in the Freudian theory. As the result it is realized that the figure is not only the chance enabling to cognize the deceitfulness and regulation nature of langage but also means enabling to raise a prelinguistic desire to the layer of signifiant and conscious. In the novel and movie the poetry of Neruda exerts influence on Mario and makes him raise the unconscious hostility to the society up to the conscious layer.
The growth process of Mario is the very process that he becomes familiar to Neruda and his poetry, and introjects them and forms the awakening consciousness. In this process metaphor enable to see an object in many different ways, opens the possibility of communication and solidarity which transcends the deceitfulness and regulation nature of langage as a given.
In this works the possibility of communication and solidarity is demonstrated in the scene that Mario records the sound of Isla Negra, such as the sound of wave and wind, the sound of pulling "plaintive" fishnet and the like, tries to send to Neruda. The scene well show the Mario"s transition from the man who has the longing for the abundance of U.S. and looks down his home to the man who looks up his home. Through the change of Mario Antonio Skarmeta and Michael Radford bring the figure commonly being called metaphor into relief and demonsteates the power of the figure. And in this way they show their respect to Neruda.
