In this study, I will set forth the Christian education practiced by Western missionaries, focussing mainly on Busan and Gyeonggnam Province, by rediscovering the forgotten history of schools established by early missionaries. The purpose of this study is to suggest a direction for educational reform for Christian schools in Busan and Gyeongnam, through the realization of the founding spirit and values of those schools at the time that they were established, together with a consideration of the meaning of education.
In this study I will bring up the issue of how Christian education began and how it was continued from a social historical viewpoint based on research into early missionaries` Christian education, which was formed and spread against the background of our nation`s recent history in both Macro-analysis method and Micro-analysis method.
Christian missionaries implanted an Enlightenment mentality over against the existing semi-feudalism, a sense of independence and sovereignty of the nation state, and a sense of nationalism based on teaching Christian truth (doctrine).
As a result, Korean people were able to establish movements of Nationalism and Independence with the confidence of their own Korean traditions.
Thus Korean society was able to escape traditional ethics and began to renew its value systems. As a result, individual citizens were able to achieve self-fulfillment and regain independence as a real sovereign nation state with citizens educated into the necessary mind set. Christian education based on God`s words became the spiritual body of our nation`s modernization and it helped us to stand tall as Today`s Korea in the world by becoming a foot stone. Today`s Christian schools should take this into account in their educational philosophies as they consider options aimed at solving societal problems among youth.
