Due to the introduction by Kim, Gyo Shin and Ham, Seok Heon, Uzimura has been well known even in Korea as the founder of the Non-Church movement. However, his position in Japanese modern history cannot only be confined within the religious field. He has also been widely noted as a social critic and thinker who protested against Japanese imperialist thinking that centered on the emperor, suggesting instead a `small nation` based on freedom and independence of the individual as the national ideal. He refused to participate in the ceremony for the imperial order for education which tried to place worship of the emperor at the center of the national morality. Both such incidents displaying contempt and his `anti-war theories` (pacifism) was a strong ground for social criticism. Til his death in 1930, he resisted the wars invoked by Japan at ten-year intervals, advocating his anti-war theories.
This paper will examine his anti-war theories in the context of the Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War, and the First World War to analyze how his theories have been understood and developed after his death by his disciples, the second generation of Non-Church followers. Finally the relationship between his anti-war thoughts and Christian thoughts will be analyzed.
