This paper will introduce Carl Raschke’s religio-philosophical idea about a methodology of religious studies. The reason why the author introduces Raschke’s idea to Korean academic society is because the issue of justice has been deficient in our current discourses of religious studies. For Raschke, religion contains a potentially emancipating power in itself. From the beginning, religion has concerned with those who are weak and powerless. It means not that this kind of concern is all about religion and religious studies, but rather that concern for justice is a very crucial factor constituting a religious structure within a society and its culture in question. It is associated with this question, what is religion? These days, however, most scholars of religion do not have any interest in the questions of justice and religion. It may be due to the postmodern awareness that definition is violence. However, when one forgets the questions of religion and justice, s/he also loses sight of the inherent liberative force of religion. Raschke believes that, when the methodology of religious studies captures us on the generic singularity of excessive beings in the existing structure of knowledge, our interest in a theory of religion can lead to the emancipating power of the religious.
