Research on local broadcasting has excessively focused on policy issues surrounding local broadcast stations without exploring the actual roles or effects of local broadcast on viewers and local communities. In this regard, this study examined how individuals’ local broadcast viewing may affect their perceptions of and behaviors for their local communities. Online surveys were administered to 529 adults living in various areas of South Korea except for the Seoul metropolitan area. The data showed that one’s local private broadcast channel viewing may extend the range of local community perceived by himself or herself, such that a heavy viewer tends to identify the metropolitan city or province where he or she lives as his or her own local community. The data also revealed that local broadcast viewing in general (total viewing of local KBS, local MBC, and local private broadcast channel) may increase involvement in local community among individuals who identify metropolitan cities or provinces as their own local communities, whereas the effect was not found among individuals who identify small cities, counties, or districts as their own local communities. In addition, the effects of local broadcast viewing were compared with those of other forms of media and interpersonal communication. Consequently, implications of the findings were discussed.
