The purpose of this study is to research the usage and meaning of the ‘言文一致’(eon-mun ilchi) in the early 20th century. The term of ‘言文一致’ is widely used in Korean language and literature. However, if we take a look at the meaning on ‘言文一致’ which are currently being used in the field of academia, we can find the ‘言文一致’ has various meanings. This paper aims at examining the usage and meaning of the newspapers and magazines focusing on the early 20th century to find the origin of concepts of the ‘言文一致’. Through this attempt, this paper presents 4 meanings of ‘言文一致’:writing Korean with Han-geul; reflecting colloquial language in sentence; phonemic writing (the phonemes correspond to the written symbols); writing appropriate sentences in standard orthography
In the early 20th century, the reason why the meaning of ‘言文一致’ varies is personal differences in linguistic background. There was no explicit orthography of writing Korean sentence at the time.
The study presents the meaning of ‘言文一致’ through datas which has not come up with significant details in the early 20th century. One important task is thinking about the reason for ‘言文一致’ becoming polysemous. Furthemore, it also shows using ‘言文一致’ more accurately on the basis of necessity.
