So, traditionally it has been widely used when carving works historic fact or descriptive forms. This is attribute to clear information delivery of relief named transparency. Transparency means that in aspects of contents. Therefore, for an artist it can deliver his intention of expression directly. For appreciators it can enlighten information of contents quickly. Such characteristic of the relief overcomes the limit of emphasizing a cross section of form in spite of the space based on sculpture.
There are two facters to determine the transparency of relief. For one thing is the frontality that the accessible scenes from the past to the future for the general recognition of contents which must be located at center stage. Another thing is the time that can integrate and arrange contents listed complicatedly like painting. The world of relief have both planarity and three dimensional solid, the criterias divided into painting and sculpture.
Relief shows the volume by stressing an undulating bump. So it is classed as sculpture essentially. But owing to starting works on the basis alike canvas and optical illusion of the basis like painting, interacting complex relation, relief is a very refined art hanging between painting and sculpture. In addition the basis plan is used to connect image to the space. Artist shows a perspective in a shape of line though drawing. In contrast relief makes effects of line by light and shade rather than drawing a line. Ultimately, the two parts of art utilize drawing effects in common for a sense of dimension.
When we make the shape, we describe flat form or steric confomation, so we need sculptural volume and flat painting sense. As relief has both characteristics, it is worthy educational process. The teaching of expression in complex feature of relief causes co-oprative effects.
In modern art the boundary od genre became weaker and weaker. So the use of relief can experience various medium and new formative art.
