Recently, there are equally a lot of loanwords in Japanese and Chinese made by means of “katakana”. Loanwords have been considerably rooted in the daily lives in Japan and their number has been on the rise. Thus, it is essential for Japanese learners to acquire such words, but diverse causes continue to disrupt such acquisition. To remedy this problem, I conceived an educational method for “acquisition by collocations of loanwords”. The collocation is an idiomatic expression based on the co-occurrence of a noun and a verb. I thought this could help learners remember nouns and verbs together, thus enabling them to practice further and more easily, and moreover, would reduce mental stress and promote acquisition in all stages of learning a foreign language. This paper summarizes the preliminary work needed before realizing this educational method. The first task was selecting the collocations of loanwords with the use of the A Dictionary of Loanword Usage. Then, the second was carrying out a survey about the usage frequency of those expressions to Japanese people in order to limit the number of the loanwords. The last was searching the Japanese-Korean translation sites for those selected words so as to examine the accuracy, and at the same time, conducting usage frequency targeting Koreans by using expressions translated into Korean. This study has revealed the fact that, although nations may share the same loanwords, their usage systems are highly different depending on each nation’s background with respect to age and language and the meanings of the language.
