Over the last decade many collegiate schools of architecture have discussed which program to be run between 5 year B. Arch program and 4 year B. Eng program. Kunsan National University can not have stepped aside from the question. What we are has been made through what we thought. So what we
thought is as follows.
To be 5 year B. Arch program, or not to be, that is the question! We thought the key to solve the question is students. Our student statistics showed that many students wanted to go to the building construction companies and also to be architects. To offer students with wider variety of opportunities for their career plans through 4 year B. Eng program was our answer. And maximum number that can be admitted to our department was too small to run two different programs.
Why integrated program?
“As a professional discipline, architecture spans both the arts and the sciences. Students must have an understanding of the arts and humanities, as well as a basic technical understanding of structures and construction.” says ACSA(Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture). So we wanted to offer education program to meet both ends.
From fission to fusion
Many other disciplines are eager to embrace interdisciplinary collaboration. In and of itself architecture is interdisciplinary. In my opinion, criteria for accreditation don’t have to be mutually exclusive. It is time to think again what the purpose and intent of accreditation is.
