The study for the Gospel of Thomas has been consistently carried out since the Nag Hammadi document was found in December 1945. However, as the western scholars have tried to understand the Gospel of Thomas within their own perspective and interpretational frame, the limit has been reached. The biggest reason is because the Gospel of Thomas does not fall into the western reasoning structure of dualism, but contains the oriental mysticism reasoning structure. Hence, when the Gospel of Thomas is investigated for its theme with the logics of western philosophy and Christian theology, the historical and genuine voice of Jesus before the Christianity was institutionalized would not be heard.
The Gospel of Thomas was compiled as a collection of traditional sayings during the process in which Greek was translated into Coptic language by the early Egypt Thomas Community. Especially the central theme that the Gospel of Thomas is trying to say is the same as "the Kingdom of God" that Christian Orthodox Theology is saying. However, its contents are revealed in a totally different way. In the Gospel of Thomas, in a way of complex level of "Kingdom", "Kingdom of God", and "Kingdom of Father", a religious ideological value is great for it reflects mysticism as oriental mystical reasoning is revealed. And its value is "the present presiding of the Kingdom" that can be noted throughout the Gospel of Thomas, and it is the theme that testifies to the main idea.
Ultimately, "the present presiding of the Kingdom of God" shown in the Gospel of Thomas, is communicated and unified in the testimonies of salvation, theology, and eschatology that are completely different from the existing Christian theology. Now, the mystical ideas revealed in the Gospel of Thomas will lead us to the arena for new communications and conversations among religions in a higher and deeper level.
