This essay deals with the problems and prospects of thematic studies in Religious Studies by examining important thematic studies of British and American scholars of religion and then by analyzing Korean journals such as Korean Journal of Religious Studies(KJRS), Religion & Culture(RC), The Critical Review of Religion & Culture(CRRC), Journal of Religion & Culture(JRC), and Journal of the Korean Academy of New Religions(JKANR).
Thematic studies are possible when theoretical studies and tradition studies are in harmony. The theoretical studies without traditions lose the perspective of Religious Studies, while the tradition studies without theories become abstract. Frank Whaling emphasized the balance between theories and traditions, and Ninian Smart proposed the multidimensional studies of religions. According to his model, we review main works about myth, ritual, and experience done by Western scholars.
Five major journals of Korean scholarly societies of Religious Studies regularly publish special articles under the particular themes of modern society. KJRS and RC pay little attention to thematic studies, whereas CRRC, JRC, and JKANR continue to organize thematic studies as the solution to the problems of modern society in Korea. In spite of the shortage of scholars and the lack of their communication, these journals debunk Korean religions and social problems.
In conclusion, in order to develop thematic studies among Korean scholars, journals should be used as the tool of thematic studies. And international scholarly networks and regular study groups should be added to existing structure of Religious Studies in Korea.
