The purpose of the study was to examine determinants of depression among the elderly who are raising grandchildren. The respondents were 968 elderly. The data used in this study were "2008 National Data on the Elderly". The data were analyzed by statistical methods as frequency and hierarchical multiple regression analysis.
The results of this study were as follows. First, the average score of depression was 3.99. It presents low level compared to medium score(7.5) of depression. Second, age, presence of spouse, subjective economic level, health status, emotional support from adult children, and attitude to raising grandchildren were significant predictors of depression among grandparents raising grandchildren. Implications of the findings were discussed and the recommendations for the policy for the elderly were presented.
