The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of a 10-week combined program of Hatha and Raja yoga on stress-related variables in middle-aged women. Twenty middle-aged women were volunteered to participate in this study as subjects, and they were randomly assigned to either yoga group (YOGA: 10) or control group (CON: 10). The subjects in YOGA undertook the combined program of Hatha and Raja yoga for 60 min/session, three times per week for 10 weeks. The subjects in CON were asked not to change their normal life style during the intervention period. Several variables related to body composition, stress level, and cardiovascular function as well as stress-related blood variables were measured and compared between pre test and post test in two groups. Main results of the study were as follow: 1) There were not any significant changes in body composition-related variables in YOGA. 2) Stress level decreased significantly in YOGA. 3) Resting heart rate, diastolic blood pressure, and mean arterial pressure decreased significantly in YOGA. 4) Cortisol and glucose decreased significantly in YOGA. These finding suggested that 10 weeks of combined program of Hatha and Raja yoga would have positive effect on stress relief. The effect would have possible due to the reduction of cortisol, resting heart rate, and blood pressure as well as enhancement of insulin resistance.
