This paper studies the current inequalities in employment, occupational status and wages of the French labor market between immigrants and native French people. Also, this paper analyzes the main causes influencing inequalities of labor market outcomes between immigrants and native French people.
Particularly, immigrants from the North Africa(Maghreb) and Sub-Saharan Africa area show much higher unemployment rates and lower occupational status scores than native Frenchmen and other European origin groups. In addition, descendants of immigrants, the so called "second generation" of North African and Sub-Saharan African origins are still severely disadvantaged in the labor market, facing overexposure to unemployment, job insecurity and heavy reliance on subsidized jobs.
The persistent gap between African immigrants and native French people might be explained by differences of several factors, such as educational level, place of residence (in particular, ghetto residence of immigrants in suburbs of large French cities), career, family background etc. But these factors can"t sufficiently explain inequalities of labor market outcomes between immigrants and native French people. Racial discrimination against North African and Sub-Saharan African origins weighs most heavily on employers" choices.
