Despite the lingering tensions in Korean peninsula, a tectonic shift in world affairs make regional cooperations in Northeast Asian countries a necessity for a stable international order and viable economic growth. A free trade agreement is a scheme to suit the need, yet it has diverse implications in terms of socio-economic and global impact on domestic politics. Reviewing the interdependency among Korea, China, and Japan, it is argued that a lack of political will seems to be the main reason behind the current status of a trilateral FTA among Korea, China and Japan. Thus there is a need to overcome all the historical and territorial disputes, and to devise a system of concrete negotiations that covers trade, tariffs, industrial structures including agriculture and service sectors. With this political consensus in mind, policy-makers need to devise a preliminary agreement on a feasible cooperative system for the least number of industrial sectors or to develop an elementary level of cooperative system, even with a limited Korea-Japan or Korea-China FTA as a part of incremental development for Northeast regional cooperations.
