Old English elegies evoke the same mood and tone from different experiences. What the Anglo-Saxon poets aim at is largely based upon the various images, which can hardly be generated without the application of precise diction. The inevitability of the destruction or passing away of earthly life, which is an essential quality of early Germanic poetry, is also seen as a major theme of OE elegies. In the evocation of this theme Anglo-Saxon poetry seems to owe its effective mood and tone to the precise use of diction and specific word formation. In addition, the words or phrases used in elegies are in many cases elaborated in order to evoke an emphatic sense appeal. This intensity of sensuous appeal provides an image of an earthly life then eventually leads to the recognition of the transience of all things on earth.
