This study plans to apply a critical concept of defamiliarization emphasized by Victor Shklovsky, Russian formalist to Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw. The techniques of defamiliarization causing concentration of consciousness and delay of perception lie in The Turn of the Screw. First, this novel borrows supernatural elements, but it is difficult for readers to know whether they are real or illusionary. The development of story differentiated from conventional ghost stories makes readers feel strange. Second, this novel does not follow conventional steps but finishes open-ending, shocking readers with the death of a boy. Third, this novel indirectly expresses the meditation and thought of the main character with several tactics that don’t present apparent situational statements. The dramatization methods in this novel including excessive assumptions, sudden pauses, ambiguities make the novel itself look three-dimensional. Fourth, this novel uses a restricted 1st-point of view that a character becomes a narrater.
