This study is an analysis about missionaries’ recognition about Korean traditional costume by investigating books from missionaries in the early period of Korean Christian mission. The results are as followed : In the early period, missionaries assessed Korean culture with Western centered point of view since they perceived Korean culture as subordinate by China. Thereafter, they started to estimate the cultural originality. Missionaries estimated Hanbok negatively. This was because that they pursued simplicity, modesty, economics, and activity. By the way, they valued aesthetic point of men’s costume affirmatively. A missionary, Gale, documented symbolic meaning of Hanbok’s sewing. Especially, seams of men’s pantaloons, it embodied ancestor worship and etiquette, which are Confucian thinking. In this study, the symbolism is interpreted as Kamagui-meori. Missionaries cognized white color of Yang-ban as representation of natural beauty and pure. And they perceived that white color of the common people had pale blue in it. However, in the time of flowering, the white color was recognized as object of renovation. Missionaries were interested in traditional costumes which people believed that there were spirits in it, and it had supernatural power. On the other hand, people who converted to Christianity expressed their belief through their costumes, and missionaries tried to find similarities between Korean traditional costume and Christian culture. There was cultural transplant by Christian in Korea in the early stage of mission. Initially, cultural syncretism appeared which keep traditional forms of costume but had inwardly Christian symbolism. There are examples of cultural syncretism. First, white costume means pure, and converting to Christianity. Moreover, by Baek-jung wearing Gat, it realized equality, which is a sprit of Christianity. After all, it appeared cultural assimilation spontaneously such as cutting knot.
