Amongst late interests on reconsidering the post-war history, the cultural movement draws attention. Progressive intellectuals and the public, with their attitude trying to confront the realities of Japanese society and themselves, gave rose to various cultural movements including poetry, literature, music and art. And those movements progressed with the ‘circle’ as its axis. Within their circle movement, the people presented various creative activities not as cultural consumers but as ones who express. The cultural movement had its peak in mid 1950s and slowly lost its strength upon the arrival of 1960s. This can be due to the society’s atmosphere experiencing its rapid economic growth or the corruption of the Japanese communist party. Nonetheless, cultural movements were present even before war. They had temporarily vanished suppressed by militarism and revived after the war. I personally think that the other reason responsible for the extinction of post-war cultural movements may lie here. In other words, after the 1960s Japanese people were told to be dragged into the ruling ideology, but the structure itself means ‘the revival of pre-war’ and that, must have had an influence on the disappearance of the cultural movements.
