The aim of this thesis is to analyze the influences of opening of port as a historical event in the formation and change of the locality, through the case study of Hakodate City, in Hokkaido. To be specific, first, this thesis seeks to find the meaning at that time of the institutional, social constructional and cultural changes which is caused by opening of port. Second, this thesis examines the methods and processes of the changes of the meaning of opening of port. And third, this thesis seek to find the practical uses of the meaning of opening of port at present. As a result, it is dealt with how the opening of port impacted(is impacting) on the Locality of Hakodate and what the generality or speciality of the Locality of Hakodate is, compared to other East Asia open port cities. The impacts of opening of port can be analyzed in three sides concretely. The first is the special characters of the side of local(recipient) culture such as government officials, merchants and residents. The second is the side of invader culture such as consuls, missionaries and traders. The third is the side of situational factors such as geographical characteristics and policy considerations.
