When the author published this novel, the oppression on labor forces was accelerated and regarded as a social issue. Ineko Sata was acknowledged as a proletarian novelist with the publication of Caramel Koba kara, which draws the realities of the patriarchal oppressions on Hiroko, the heroine of the novel as well as the exploitations of the labors.
The power of the head of family is well described with Hiroko who had to follow her father even though she could not see her father ignoring her grandmother’s opinion. Also in the factory, most of the female workers got ill after being forced to work in a cold place. Polishing perfume bottles, which is not their workload officially, fluctuation of their salary and the hand baggage search as they finish work every night shows the strictness that the female workers faced then.
The author also pointed them out from a view of a living novelist. However, it is widely believed that after this work, the author properly showed her interest in writing novels by exchanging the coteries. People say that the author wrote the freshness of the female workers’ unreasonable life from what she actually experienced. It resulted in the limitation of understanding on the human lights on labors, because this piece of novel was written before the author deeply understood the conditions of the workers as well as the timely social issues.
