In this paper, a methodology is presented to assess the risk of product platform development considering the change of exogenous factors from the environment. A product platform is usually in doubt in terms of its capability to achieve the expected goals due to the intrinsic uncertainty in the future market. In order to correctly assess the risk resulting from the investment for product platform development, a quantitative measure called value at risk (VaR) has been adopted from the field of financial engineering. Among the subsystems comprising a product platform, the ones that significantly contribute to the risk are identified by decomposing the overall risk into component risks. The proposed method has been applied to a case of automotive industry in which customers’ preferences fluctuate depending on the exogenous factors. Various platform development strategies were built with the help of the proposed methodology, by assessing and decomposing the risk in a systematic manner.
