As the part of IT convergence in the shipbuilding industries, we deal with the adoption of the business process management (BPM) to a ship hull production design process. A ship hull production design which is the processbased task requires most man-hours (M/H) amongst whole ship design processes and is coupled with a ship production directly so that it could contribute largely to a productivity enhancement. Thus, we analyzed the hull production design task in the perspective of the business process so that we generated the BPM models of a manager and a design engineer, respectively. Especially in a manager process, we have implemented optimal assignment method as a part of the decision support system that helps a manager to make an assignment of hull blocks to design engineers efficiently in the BPMS (BPM system). In this paper, we suggest the concept of the block standard design M/H and the variable design M/H of a design engineer for the production design optimal assignment method. According to this concept, we modeled a design engineer and a block and computed the estimated M/H using these models and their mutual interaction. To make the assignment that minimizes total required M/Hs in the production design, we adopted Hungarian Algorithm. The BPM executable model of the hull production design process has been implemented using the Bonita Open Solution 5.5 that is one of the representative open source BPMS.
