This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics of the wintering bird community in Anyangcheon. A survey was carried out over five sections, by the line transect and point count methods, in January and February 2002 to 2008. Twenty-five bird species were observed during the study period. The highest number of species recorded was 17 in February 2008, and the highest number of individuals recorded was 1,696 in February 2004. The dabbling ducks Anas crecca, Anas poecilorhyncha, and Anas platyrhynchos were the dominant species present. The highest observed number of dabbling ducks was in the area between Anyangkyo and Anyangchelkyo. The high density of the wintering bird community may be related to the abundant aquatic plants present, and the stable water depth in section 2. Anyangcheon is therefore a very important habitat for the wintering bird community. The conversion of the riparian zone in section 4 to natural vegetation would increase the wintering bird population. Indeed, the expansion of several habitats, and the maintenance of the stream corridor because of its important role in connecting the fragmented habitats of the Han River, would both increase the size of the wintering bird community.
