Jacopo Bellini’s sketchbooks played a significant role in the early development of Venetian Renaissance landscape painting. Unlike the pattern drawings of the medieval model-books, Jacopo’s drawings in the London and Paris albums show the artist’s keen interest in the representation of space. Although considered somewhat empirical and improvised in comparison to the geometrical strictness of Albertian costruzione legittima, his method of unifying the figures and the background revealed more naturalistic effect on the exploration of the visible world. It is the legacy of ornamental International Gothic style and influence of late Byzantine art which were integrated with the Renaissance linear perspective system in Jacopo’s drawings.
In later drawings of the London volume Jacopo often pursued a study of realistic landscape and townscape as independent clause. And it is these landscape and architectural sceneries that were not used only as drafts of the topographical incidents within the religious paintings of Gentile and Giovanni but also as the model of the veduta paintings which began to flourish during the beginning of the 16th century in Venice.
