This study aims to interpret the social, cultural, and political meanings embedded in a traditional market. A traditional market is a space not only for economic activities selling and buying commodities but also for social, cultural, and political activities. However, such activities have rapidly declined mainly due to the opening of local distribution and circulation market to the global market that brings about various changes in purchasing patterns of local consumers. In response to the decline, the Korean government has supported activities of revitalizing traditional markets, including facilities improvement, education for tradespeople, and cultural events. Under these circumstances, local tradespeople in the Jeonju Nambu market have tried to protect their own space through the medium of three existing tradespeople’s organizations. This study explores the background and purpose of organizing the three tradespeople’s organizations and their activities in the Jeonju Nambu market. In addition, this study examines various factors that affect the change of the Jeonju Nambu market, including government policies for the revitalization of traditional markets. This study shows the internal and external causes of the change in the tradespeople’s organizations in the market. We also explain how tradespeople have conflicted and negotiated with one another based on their socio-economic differentiation to overcome the declining economic conditions of the market.
