This study set out to investigate the expressions of nature in popular songs and their effects, thus confirming the artistic values of natural representation. The study set three ways that nature was represented in popular songs and examined their effects.
When nature was presented as realistic nature in popular songs, the sentiment of the speaker would expand and get reinforced. When the speaker felt happy, nature would feel familiar and reinforce the happy feeling. When the speaker was in sorrow, nature would serve as the device to maximize the feeling. It is because nature expressed as realistic nature tries to achieve unity and harmony with the speaker by forming object-like relationships with him or her.
When nature was presented metaphorically in popular songs, the sameness between the two subjects would work to convey the emotion of the speaker very effectively. The sameness of metaphor is highly significant in that it is based on the sameness between man and nature. When personification was employed, natural objects would feel more familiar and reflect the psychology of the speaker trying to conform to the circulatory order of nature.
The symbolic expressions of nature in popular songs can be divided into allegory based on one-on-one correspondence and symbolism generating various meanings. Nature expressed in the technique of allegory would deliver an important message from the speaker’s emotion and attitude in many cases. Nature expressed in the technique of symbolism would imply various meanings and overcome the cliche popularity of popular songs. The symbolic expressions of nature are very effective for taking the grade of popular songs by a notch by expressing real issues with very artistic lyrics.
