Nowadays boundaries in the international society have collapsed because of material and cultural exchange and fusion. As the fusion of different cultures and the emerge of family members in multicultural families, the number of multicultural families in Korea is increasing in an unprecedented speed. It is reasonable to say that cultural fusion between family members in multicultural families greatly affects family harmony, education for the kids and the establishment of their cultural identity. Also proper understanding of different cultures decides the relationships between individuals, husband and wife, family and neighbors in living environments and further more affects society harmony. However, researches on cultural difference and fusion from a housing perspective are still very rare. Therefore it is necessary to study how to minimize cultural differences in housing environment and accelerate cultural fusion. The study aims at space design for cultural fusion which is to plan space for family members in multicultural families.
The main method of this study is literature review with the help of interviews. Housing cultural differences between Korea and China were studied by literature review and actual housing cultural differences were studied by interviews with six Chinese marriage immigrants. Based on the above, housing environments were planned to maintain traditional Korean living style and at the same time consider marriage immigrants in the case of Korean traditional housing Hanok. This study is significant for providing a method for the fusion of tradition and foreign cultures.
