The importance of 3D modeling tool that supports the realistic modeling is increasing rapidly. Many designers these days refine their thinking using design tools with a range of different expressions.
An interesting notion here is that depending on which design tool the user adopts, the process and the outcome of the design can be significantly different. In other words, in the process of visualizing the idea, design tool can stimulate new ideas as well as constrain intended ideas due to the given design features. These symptoms occur most prominently in the early stage of design process, when brainstorming and visualizing of the ideas happen in an interactive fashion. There have been many studies to reveal this interaction mechanism between design tools and design cognition.
Most existing researches however had studied on relative advantages and limitations of design tools and traditional hand sketching. The purpose of this study is to find out the impact of the CAD tool on designers cognition process and to suggest new standard of CAD tool that can maximize the designers’ idea. First, we focus on 3D modeling CAD tool and tried to figure out the impact of the 3D modeling tool on designers’ cognition and outcome in early stage of design. Secondly, by researching and analyzing the feature of the two different 3D modeling tools, we extract the features that are needed in concept design stage and suggest 3D modeling tool features that can seamlessly support novice designers’ concept design activities.
