This study has analyzed the change of coloring in new images of men, in Barthes’ myth analysis model. 3 pieces of advertisement were chosen among those in ‘90s and 2012~2013, of which colors of character, clothes and background were extracted for the study. As a result of that, men in the cosmetics advertisement in the ‘90s represent the ideology of challenge and conquest, while those in 2012~2013 show the success of gentle men. From the perspectives of coloring first of all, blackish or dark tones expressed tough men in the ‘90s, and bluish colors were mainly used as a typical color for men. On the other hand, more various colors appear in the ads of 2012~2013. Black and blue are still favored for men’s cosmetics ads now, but they turned milder and warmer than before, through deep, dull or grayish tones. Secondly, deep, dark or red tones were used for men’s skin in the men’s cosmetics ads in the ‘90s to put an emphasis on their copper-colored skin. On the other hand, men’s skin in 2012~2013 is expressed at maximum as bright and shiny ones like that of women in soft and light tones with the models’ hands toward their faces so that their skin can catch eyes. Especially, the men’s femininity was emphasized so the colors, models’ poses and copies are similar to those for women’s. As a study to analyze the change of Korean men through the meaning of coloring actions, this study gets the limit of the first case. While diachronic observation is needed to apply it for the viewpoints of the translation, it is limited for the comparison between certain periods to grasp the change of men’s image. The following studies would be meaningful if they precisely see the change of men’s image through coloring in diachronic perspective.
