The ability of feeling empathy is important to meaningful social relationships. However, as new technologies change society rapidly, the forms of relationships, especially those in the family, ask for new ways to support and feel empathy. In this paper, we explore bio-signal sharing to support empathetic interaction. We propose ‘Wearbeat’, an empathy enhancement device designed for a father and a child to overcome environmental and temporal barriers. Essentially, ‘Wearbeat’ lets the father build physical contact to his remote child, wherever and whenever by transforming sounds from bodies to tactile feelings. A user scenario and a pilot study served to scope the potential of the study, and to validate the device"s value in contributing to family relationships, and specifically, in meeting the needs of Korean fathers to build meaningful and empathetic relationships to their children.
