French poet Francis Ponge and Korean poet O Kyu-won have apparent affinities: they have pursued “thing in itself”; they defended realism; they have tried to eliminate the idealism and the subjectivity in poetic process. Even they defined their goals as very similar non-intermediate terms, i.e. “the poetry of things” (Ponge) and “raw image poetry” (O). This article analyzes their homonymous poem “Butterfly” to expose immanent differences of the poets. Ponge’s main concern is to overthrow the ideology of the human subjectivity. Language is an indispensable tool for him. O Kyu-won’s goal is to reach the state of things where the intervention of ideas is not yet carried. For protecting butterfly from ideas, language must be set back. Despite their strategical differences, it cannot be stressed too much that they have common goals of proposing things over ideas.
