Raymond Carver, often called the “American Chekhov”, is likely the greatest writer of the modern American short story. Although a variety of studies are currently underway, the volume of comparative studies between Anton Chekhov and Raymond Carver remains insufficient. This paper will examine how a Russian short story writer Chekhov influenced the works of Raymond Carver. Special focus is given toward how the Russian Chekhov influenced the creative world of the American Chekhov.
The beginning of the paper provides a comprehensive review of the essential elements of Chekhov’s creative activities. Next, whether or not these elements are in accord with Carver’s works is examined.
Three perspectives on Chekhov’s distinct creative world are appropriate.
First, writing people, especially artists, it is time to admit that nothing in this world can not tell.
Second, literature is called art that depicts life as what it really is.
Third, the artist, writer, does not judge and is impartial witness of life.
In the main part of the paper those three perspectives are mirrored to Carver’s posthumous short story 『The Errand』 which covers the passing of Chekhov. The primary goal of this comparative study is to discover the relationship between these two writers. As a result, those essential perspectives associated with Chekhov will also be recognized as Carver’s, in his own distinct way. The short story makes it clear that the two writes have commonalities in their creative processes; however, this is not to say they are the same generally. This paper is a significant comparative research. The analyzing of Chekhov and Carver and their works must be considered an initial step for further studies on those writers.
