The purpose of this study is to investigate how Internet-mediated videoconferencing stimulates intercultural learning within a Zone of Proximal Identity Development(ZPID). Because of the relationship between language, identity and culture, L2 videoeducation can provide critical intercultural understanding in this global era. The study is conceptualized by a sociocultural theory that is fundamentally related to mediation in human evelopment through social interactions and tools. It analyzes the virtual classroom interactions of a Korean high school student learning English as a foreign language through multimodal videoconferencing. The social interactions supported by video -conferencing facilitate the development of critical awareness of the self and the other and allow for a deeper understanding of one’s home culture (C1) and the target culture (C2). Learners can create new identities that fit into the third place (C3), where diversity of people and culture is respected. The zone of proximal identity development (ZPID) emerges from intercultural learning.
