The discursive choices and strategies used to depict news actors often reflect the contrasting contexts of the national newspapers. A useful test case is the discursive patterns of news actors represented in the headlines to cover the Libyan civil war of 2011. Using data collected from on-line articles in the British national daily newspaper, The Guardian, and the Chinese national daily newspaper, The People’s Daily, a social actor framework is deployed to analyze the discursive patterns in terms of Van Leeuwen’s (1996, 2002) social actor categories. The results demonstrate how differences in the national contexts between these two newspapers are affirmed in the discursive choices of their chosen news actors in the news headlines. These results also highlight the global concepts of positive-self and negative-other construed in accordance with the national positions of these two newspapers.
