Architectural design technology is the spinal cord of traditional construction industry. Upon the modern architecture, architectural technology always has been gone parallel within designing and built the stabilized foundation. However, development of innovative technology, especially IT-based and environment field has blurred the boundary of limitation of the architectural design. Furthermore, high-tech architectural technology that defines the creative design has been focused on mostly Europe and the United States.
In this situation, discussion of future architectural design technology development plan is considered important subject matters. Unlike in the past, working range expansion of architectural design industry, and improvement as a global leading Korean architectural technology are the reasons necessity of discussion. However our technology is regarded relatively not high contrary to the expectation. Therefore, we have to open ears to expert’s comments and suggest practical systematic solution through cooperation with government and architectural industry.
There are three main issues of Korean current status and problems of design technology. Those are categorized with the social and cultural recognition issue based on the situation of architectural design industry, political issue related with regulation and structure of that industry and technical issue. Upon those issues, the following contents should be considered as well. 1) Necessity of social awareness of importance of design technology, 2) Carelessness accumulation of design technology, 3) Carelessness training design technical experts, 4) Necessity of co-operation and integration with technology association, 5) Necessity of problematic awareness of ambiguous design technology, 6) Necessity of experience of high-tech and integrate design of architecture, 7) Necessity of expert level of architectural consulting association, 8) Necessity of consistent co-operation in architectural design field, 9) Slow globalization. It is quite urgent agenda to lead to new and hopeful way with solutions upon problems that have not been considered carefully.
Architectural design industry is the basic on overall building industry cord of traditional construction industry. Thus, leading policies and institution from co-operation of nation and architectural design industry is necessary to develop the architectural industry and to bring up to the world’s fifth design technology competitiveness. In order to solve social and technical issue, there might be seven solutions. First, clearly clarify the responsibility and authority of related architectural design industry to improve each their technics. Second, provide responsibility for architects to take the role of determining all the design, engineering technologies and materials in order to produce precisely drawn architectural construction drawings and specification. Third, standardization of architectural notion to give accurate information with efficient understanding. Fourth, departmentalize and specialize the architectural consultancy corresponding to the agglomerated building. Fifth, accumulate the Korean original architecture technology and provide it in global standard. Sixth, practice CA (Construction Administration) and consistent cooperation to produce a high-quality architectural work. Seventh, early conversion to BIM design systems corresponding to IT-based advance technology architecture work. Eighth, promoting technical experts in each field to construct the international competitiveness of the design technology.
In the rapidly changing international environment, suggesting revolutionary solutionis the main purpose in this discussion. There could be different perceptions to problems of architectural social issues, however, upon the experience in the field the suggested solutions may review and discuss in more practical way. Through this discussion, I hope the competitiveness of architectural design technology of Korea to be improved in near future.
