In liberal arts programs, the leadership education is important in terms of inoculating self-confidence into students to take a responsibility for their life. Leadership starts from inner seeking questioning “who am I” and then have a positive influence on others. Paying attention to professor’s leadership characteristics, this research paper studies the communication rhetoric which can increase students’ learning motive and class satisfaction. From the perspective of importance of ‘servant leadership’ for students to breed leadership and internalize humanistic life attitude to them, this research paper examines professor’s communication leadership in the liberal arts program, applying Greenleaf’s servant leadership concept.
The cores of servant leadership are the abilities of understanding, foreseeing, and listening. After an analysis of students’ class evaluation, I realized professor’s attitude of encouraging and listening students’ activities, rather than ordering and controlling, is the most important to lead effective class atmosphere. Like this, the characteristic of professor’s servant leadership is to lead members by encouraging their cooperation, trust, and mutual listening, through exerting ethical influence to them as a servant attitude.
Through this research, I realized that important premises are, during the class, to encourage common vision and “our” education goal and to secure “ethos” through the trust; that is the basis of leadership. Through this research, I also could concretely figure out that forming democratic “learning” atmosphere has a meaningful educational affect to students, reinforcing “pathos” through emotional support as well as communicating each other, considering linguistic and non-linguistic “communication” aspects. In conclusion, from the perspective that leaders are the people who change the world having interests to others, this research paper emphasizes that professors have to have the servant leadership that will lead positive changes to students’ life.
