The deindustrialization of East Asia’s leading cities, including Seoul, has been gaining pace as urban economies transition to a focus on advanced services. This process is far advanced in the United States and it is only belatedly that planners have recognized the important role that urban manufacturing still plays for workers, advanced economic sectors, and economic resilience through agglomeration economies. To avoid this mistake in newly deindustrializing cities, this study identifies industries that have remained urban through the country’s long history of deindustrialization by calculating urban and urban core location quotients for 53 large cities in the United States collectively and individually using high resolution Census Bureau data on sectoral employment. Herfindahl-Hirschman Indices are then generated for each of these sectors to determine whether sectoral employment is concentrated in individual cities. The paper finds that these sectors are generally common to all cities and that they constitute four groupings with different functional roles for large cities: advanced services support, fashion, high-tech, and household consumption goods. While some of these sectors are reliant on localization economies, urbanization economies are still important for more traditional sectors. The paper concludes with some guidelines for identifying and protecting these and similar sectors.
