This paper investigates the polite speech style -yeo, which is used in online Korean conversation as the equivalent of written -yo. Two websites were used to collect data. Overall -yeo is used in 9.5% of the cases, which means that the writing style among internet users has some tendency for -yeo. In Korean, the honorific infix -si- expresses the writer"s respect toward the addressee and this -si- occurs with -yo in all types of sentences. However, I found that this honorific infix -si- is not compatible with -yeo in imperative sentences. Another point is that -yeo expresses solidarity between interlocutors in online interaction. While in spoken language people can employ various strategies such as intonations, smiles or gestures to express solidarity, there is no way to deliver one"s attitude toward the addressee in written language (online). I suggest that -yeo which is written based on the pronunciation of spoken Korean -yo is one of the strategies to express solidarity, especially among teenagers.
