Ninety percent of the Korean residents in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture are the descendents from Hamkyong-Do. The language in Yanbian area can be regarded as a variant of Hamkyong dialect, though people found it difficult to wholly view it that way. The purpose of this research focuses on the Sino-Korean words in Yanbian area. A catalog of the Sino-Korean prefixes will be drafted in order to make clear the semantic function and feature of every individual prefix. After having studied on the recorded Sino-Korean words in the dictionary, five prefixes (i.e. ‘가(假)-’, ‘로(老)-’, ‘생(生)-’, ‘왕(王)-’, ‘토(土)-’) were chosen for further examination on their semantic function.
