This paper explicated the different lexicalizaton patterns between English and Korean and the differences come from the different cognitive structures of their language users. In this study, Talmy’s Figure and Ground concepts(Talmy: 2000a) are applied to the syntactic structures of English and Korean to show the aspects of the lexiclaization patterns and to determine their language typologies. After examining, we found that the phrase structures, time/place adverbials, and relatives clauses are lexicalized by Figure precedence principle in English, whereas Ground precedence structure can be seen in phrase structures, possessives, relatives clauses, time/place adverbials, and complex event structures in Korean.
