To understand concentration, diversity, antibiotic characteristics of methicillin-resistant Kocuria species that are present in the indoor air of childcare facilities, air sampling was performed from October 2012 to February 2013 on the 120 childcare facilities of Seoul in Korea.
Methicillin resistances of obtained colonies were tested, and they were subjected to 16S rRNA analysis for the methicillin-resistant Kocuria species determination. Methicillin-resistant Kocuria species were present in 9.2% of childcare facilities studied. A total of 3 species and 52 strains were identified from indoor air of the 120 childcare facilities. Kocuria marina was the commonest species (90.4%). Isolated Kocuria species showed a high resistance to oxacillin, erythromycin, ceftizoximem and mupirocin.
