Based on the realization that there is lack of research on Russian tourists as well as too much emphasis on only the economic aspects, this study was conducted to focus on a fundamental research which can reduce the social distance through the understanding of cultural characteristics. Although Russian tourists were able to reduce the social distance concerning Korea and Koreans as they became the subject of gaze during their visit, some Russian tourists viewed Koreans to drink excessively, be loud, and even use too much profane language. These aspects are the objective views of the social problems in Korea, and they are social issues which we must resolve. As the object of gaze, Russian tourists gave positive feelings as they felt like a model or celebrity, but some Russian tourists said they felt like an animal in a zoo. It seems these points are something that Koreans should watch out for when looking at Russian tourists. The fact that Koreans felt intimidated, being the object of gaze, due to their large build when Russian tourists looked at them seems to be a lack of understanding of Russians so far.
The study sought to reduce the social distance between two cultures by analyzing the mutual gaze between Russian tourists and Koreans in order to analyze the cultural and social understanding, which is a more fundamental issue in tourism.
