This paper examined the stratum of the tanyue on the spread of the Chan Buddhist temples through two prefecture cases in Tang China.
After Anlushan rebellion, the Chan temple economy took shape, and gradually became the main forms of Buddhist temple economy. It was characterized by everybody working together, cultivating lands with their own efforts, and being self-sufficient. So the Chan Buddhist temples could be built in mountains and hills regardless of its size. They made a great contribution to Changjiang Develoment(長江開發) after Anlushan rebellion. On the other hand, the Chan Buddhist temples pleaded the wealthy and the powerful person to donate for building and managing of the temples at the same time, even though they emphasized ‘the Chan temple economy’. And these Chan temple economical forms, which were quite different from the existing forms that aristocratic bureaucrat fully supported, induced to involve a large of and various of tanyue, donors such as ordinary landlords, local powers, local elites.
Many examples could be found in Fuzhou(撫州) and Fuzhou(福州) prefecture, The process of building Baiyun Chan temple(白雲禪院) in Fuzhou(撫州) showed that the role of tanyue was a decisive factor for building and managing of the temple. They were classified as local powers amid political disorder in the late Tang period. The statistic of building the Chan Buddhist temples in Fuzhou(福州) also showed a fair number of tanyue were yiren(邑人), liren(里人), the ordinary people who had not official title. They were classified as local powers, local elites, and landlords amid cultivating Fuzhou(福州) in the late Tang period. As seen above, the main group of the tanyue moved from aristocratic bureaucrat to ordinary landlords, local powers, local elites in the latter half of the Tang Dynasty.
