Many immigrant worker and married immigrant have come to Korea. Various writers in the 2000s wrote about multicultural phenomenon. This paper classified multicultural novels by the relationship between koreans and immigrants.
First, there are multicultural novels that represent the reality that immigrants are excluded. This novels accused of colonial (un)consciousness of korean about immigrant worker, married immigrant, and north korean refugees. Immigrant worker, married immigrant, and north korean refugees are shaped as beings in extreme pain. This is a fair recognition. But this shaping has the risk that isolate migrants as other.
Second, there are multicultural novels that migrants are identified with korean. This novels remove position of migrants by ignoring the otherness of immigrants. Without considering the uniqueness of migrants, this novels prematurely shows imagination and reason koreans and immigrants are identified.
Third, there are multicultural novels that suggests the possibility of solidarity based on the universality between Korean and immigrants. Korean and immigrants interact equally in this novels. And this novels suggests the possibility of solidarity based on the the proletariat between Korean and immigrants. But this novels don’t reach the stage that pay attention to the uniqueness of migrants.
Fourth, there are multicultural novels that show on the universality and uniqueness of migrants at the same time. Human dignity is born through recognition and empathy. Ethical attitudes about immigrants come into the world the universality and uniqueness of migrants at the same time. The attitudes occur when we the recognize uniqueness of migrants and sympathize with the universality of migrants.
