I investigate new methodology of theorizing the inseparable relation between ‘the inside=Chos?n’ and ‘the outside=China’ by focusing on the case of Yi T?k-mu(李德懋) and Pak Je-ka(朴齊家). The concept ‘the inside?outside’ is invented by myself to make it clear that relation between ‘the inside=Chos?n’ and ‘the outside=China’ is inseparable. I also intend to explain the differences among the Chos?n literati so called ‘Yeon-am group’(燕巖一派).
Through the comparative study of regards on ‘the inside?outside’ of Yi and Pak, I make some theoretical hypotheses. First, I divide ‘China’ into (1) ‘China as the ideal’ and (2) ‘China as the real’. The thinking mode of ‘the inside?outside’ vary according to whether these two aspects are seperated or not. Second, I divide the relation between ‘the inside=Chos?n’ and ‘the outside=China’ into (1) the ‘unmittelbar’ relation and (2) the ‘mittelbar’ relation. The thinking mode of ‘the inside?outside’ vary according to whether ‘the inside’ and ‘the outside’ are related ‘unmittelbar’ or ‘mittelbar’.
Such concepts as ‘China as the ideal’, ‘China as the real’, ‘unmittelbar’ relation of ‘the inside?outside’, ‘mittelbar’ relation of ‘the inside?outside’ construct the theoretical frame of this investigation.
