After the investigation of the historic features of Nogu in the late Joseon dynasty on the basis of these findings, the impact of Nogu’s characterized aspects and meaning and her behaviors on the whole novels has been surveyed in this research.
Unlike Nogu’s divine and royal-friendly features in old times, her look in the late Joseon dynasty was represented as an vulgar woman receiving rewards and enticing obscene acts of youngsters and ladies from Yangban and good families. Yulryeyoram, a copy written in the 19th century involves the cases of punishments of Nogu’s bad behaviors, and so considering this situation, Nogu’ misdeeds may have been prevailed enough to be punished from the 18th century.
Nogu’s various features in the late Joseon dynasty are characterized in romantic novels with Nogu, Sangsadonggi, Jeolhwagidam and Poeuygyogib. Each Nogu is described as an character mysteriously beautified in Sangsadonggi, a person promoting the main characters’ meetings and actively planning their romance in Jeolhwagidam and an role involved but significantly reduced in their romance in Poeuygyogib. Especially, these main characters in three novels have in common in that they meet at Nogu’s house but have sexual intercourse at their own house.
In this respect, Nogu in romantic novels in the late Joseon dynasty is considered a person with both the divinity of Wallha and vulgarity inviting obscene acts. It is likely viewed that the key factors which make these novels not dime novels including the inappropriate love between a Confucian and a court lady as well as married man and woman’s immoral romance but the ardent romance novels are Nogu’s presence to make sure that any meetings will lead to relations and her sacred position in addition to the roles of main characters.
