This paper is a case-studies examination of the intergenerational communication aspect of Korean classical literary works. In modern and contemporary literature, incidents of intergenerational conflict appear in an explosive number. In contrast to this phenomenon, classical works highlighted intergenerational rapport. This paper, first of all, summarizes four aspects of this intergenerational intimacy in Late Joseon society. Ultimately, the most salient aspect of intergenerational communication in pre-modern Korean society was that patriarchal and Confucian customs exerted great power, and the culture of the younger generation honoring and carrying on the values of its progenitors became a generalized social practice. Communication between generations thus became relatively conflict-free. Next, the paper analyzes the culture of intergenerational communication of the Late Joseon period by examining two family cases. The first is the case of JI Deok-gu, a jungin (also chungin, a commoner with privileges) who published Gyesayuta, a collection of poems, in 1815; the second is the case of YI Ik who led Samduhoe (‘three beans gathering’) among members of his extended family. Thirdly, the paper examines intergenerational rapport in three prominent families of the late Joseon period and how the rapport is intertwined with the families’ literary and scholarly productions. It examines, for example, the case of Bak Je-ga (also Pak Je-ga), and how in the cases of Seo Yu-gu and Hong In-mo there were active exchanges of poems among their immediate and extended family members. Through its analysis, the paper thus brings to light the culture and reality of literary creation in which the older generation, headed by a father or a father figure, communicates actively with the younger generation.
